First 'Aydabir' Conversation of the Year Titled "Between Two Worlds: Architecture and Environmental Graphic Design" Took Place
The first installment of the 'Aydabir' conversation series for the year 2024, themed "Between Two Worlds: Architecture and Environmental Graphic Design," was held at the addresistanbul IDEALIST Center, sponsored by Bien and organized by the IDEALIST Interior Architecture Association. Moderated by graphic designer Ferhat Meşhur, the conversation featured graphic designer Sadık Karamustafa and interior architect Âli Doruk as speakers.
The inaugural segment of the 'Aydabir' series for the year 2024, a collaboration between the IDEALIST Interior Architecture Association and Bien, took place on Wednesday, February 28th, at the addresistanbul IDEALIST Center, under the theme "Between Two Worlds: Architecture and Environmental Graphic Design." Moderated by graphic designer Ferhat Meşhur, the conversation featured graphic designers Sadık Karamustafa and Interior Architect Âli Doruk as speakers. The conversation, which attracted a keen interest from architects, designers, university students, and industry professionals, concluded with the speakers addressing the audience's questions.
In the conversation focused on multidisciplinarity moderated by Ferhat Meşhur, with a focus on integration between design disciplines, the importance of interaction between graphic design and architecture was emphasized. The speakers examined the current collaboration between these two disciplines, discussing how their relationship could be strengthened and leveraged in projects.
Sadık Karamustafa shared his views, drawing examples from his professional projects and global practices. Âli Doruk highlighted the lack of awareness among employers regarding environmental graphic design and interior wayfinding issues in Turkey, emphasizing the need for budget allocation to these areas, and shared examples from his projects. Through questions directed by Ferhat Meşhur, recommendations were made on effective collaboration methods between architects and graphic designers. It was noted that the multidisciplinary approach learned during university education would contribute to maintaining the same approach in professional life.
The Aydabir conversation series, featuring speakers from diverse disciplines, addresses current, social, and inspiring topics in a free and open environment. The next event of the 'Aydabir' series, with a new theme, will take place in March at the IDEALIST Center in addresistanbul. Âli Doruk
Âli Doruk, a graduate of the Bilkent University Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, completed an architecture course at Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1990. He graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1996 after receiving office design training. In 1997, he founded Net Architecture and continues his work within this framework.
Sadık Karamustafa
Sadık Karamustafa received his graphic design education at Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. He then completed his master's and "proficiency in arts" (doctorate) theses at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He began teaching at the institution where he received his education in 1989 and retired with the title of professor in 2013. He currently serves as a part-time lecturer in the graduate program at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, teaching Typography courses. He also continues to serve as the project director of Grafist/International Istanbul Graphic Design Days event, held annually since 1997 within the Graphic Design Department of the University.
Ferhat Meşhur
Ferhat Meşhur completed his undergraduate studies in the Graphic Department at Eskişehir Anadolu University and his master's studies at Futurarium Scuola di Design in Milan. He also holds two master's degrees in Cultural Studies and History from Istanbul Bilgi University. He is currently engaged in branding design, packaging, and publication graphics. He teaches environmental graphic design, branding design, web design, and packaging design at universities. He serves as vice president at the Graphic Designers Professional Organization.
